Introduction

Blepharoplasy (Eyelid Surgery)

During the aging process, your eyelids can stretch, and the muscles supporting them may weaken over time. An increase in excess skin and fat can be visibly noticeable around your eyelids, which can cause sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids, and bags under the eyes. Along with cosmetic issues, a large amount of sagging skin around the eyes can reduce side vision (peripheral vision), especially the upper and outer parts of the visual field. But there is a remedy for this! Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, can address these problems. If you are considering Blepharoplasty come see Dr. Alton Ingram at Ingram Cosmetic Surgery in Nashville, TN. Dr. Ingram is a top-rated board-certified cosmetic surgeon who understands the importance of safe, medical care. He and his team will take care of you. Find out how Dr. Ingram can help make your eyes look younger and more alert.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a delicate surgical procedure that involves removing excess skin from the eyelids, while also addressing wrinkles, lines, and other issues. Blepharoplasty can be performed on both the upper eyelid or the lower, or both depending on the issues you are looking to address. Blepharoplasty is usually done in an outpatient setting, followed by a series of appointments to track healing and progress. Results from a Blepharoplasty vary from patient to patient, but can most commonly be noticeable after a few weeks, when incisions are healed.

This procedure is not just an aesthetic intervention, but a path to physical comfort and enhanced health. Breast reduction surgery might give breast skin but also help improve self-image and the ability to take part in physical activities. You can have a breast reduction at any age — sometimes even as a teenager. But breasts that aren’t yet fully grown might need a second surgery later in life.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

The main reason patients choose lower eyelid surgery is to eliminate the look of bags under the eyes or to address the “hollow” look that is common during aging. Whether it is due to genetics, lifestyle, or simply the aging process, our surgery can remove the excess fatty tissue, improving and smoothing the skin around the area drastically. This will enable a more refreshed-looking appearance to your eyes and surrounding skin.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

The upper eyelid is the most common type of Blepharoplasty at Dr. Ingram’s practice. Many of his patients choose this option to remove excess skin often appearing with age or genetics, which can result in your eyes looking bigger, brighter, and more alert. Upper eyelid surgery also has functional benefits – it can improve your vision and make the eyelid feel less heavy.

Who are the best candidates for Eyelid Surgery?

When you come to see Dr. Ingram for your Nashville Blepharoplasty procedure, he will take the time to assess your concerns and issues to determine whether this is the right surgery for you. For some patients whose issues are not as severe as you thought, Dr. Ingram may recommend a cosmetic procedure instead such as a dermal filler or BOTOX.

Here is what Dr. Ingram looks for to determine whether you are a good candidate for Blepharoplasty:

  • Someone who has overall good health
  • No major underlying medical conditions that could potentially impair healing
  • Nonsmokers
  • People with a positive outlook and realistic goals
  • Concerns about eyes that can be adequately addressed with this surgery

First Steps

What’s the first step?

The first step to getting eyelid surgery in Nashville is to book a consultation with Dr. Ingram, so you can learn more about what the procedure involves. During the consultation, he will take the time to assess your concerns, look at the issues affecting your eyelids, and create a treatment plan to benefit you. Once he is confident in your candidacy and the benefits you will receive from this surgery, our patient coordinator will schedule your appointment and set you up for success. You can give us a call or contact us on our website.

What to expect on the day of Blepharoplasty surgery

Before your Blepharoplasty surgery, Dr. Ingram and his team will go over a list of instructions to prepare you for the procedure. This can include avoiding certain medications, fasting, or staying out of the sun.

When you arrive at our clinic for your procedure, our team will get you comfortable, while Dr. Ingram informs you of his process and the techniques he will be using. To begin, a type of anesthesia will be administered, to ensure minimal pain and discomfort throughout the surgery.

Next, the incisions will be made on the areas where Dr. Ingram will focus his attention – upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. These incisions are carefully designed and made so that any scarring will be completely hidden by the natural folds and contours of your skin.

After the incision has been made, fatty tissue will be removed, excess skin will be cut away, and the remainder of the eyelid skin will be repositioned to give your eyes a tighter and firm look. Once this is done, the incisions will be closed with either sutures or glue.

With your surgery complete, you will be given time to recover before returning home. Our team will ensure you have all the information you need to set you up for a smooth and successful recovery period. This begins with arranging transportation to and from our clinic as driving is not advised after Blepharoplasty.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

During the recovery period for blepharoplasty, it is very important to rest and avoid strenuous activities, especially looking at a screen for too long. Avoiding sun exposure by staying in the shade and wearing sunglasses while out and about is recommended.

Most patients are given gauze to cover the eyes after surgery, which allows for a better healing process and prevents any intrusion into the surgical area. Bruising and swelling generally lessen slowly in about 10 to 14 days. Scars from the surgical cuts may take months to fade.

You can use a cool compress gently on the eye areas, or over-the-counter medication if you experience mild pain or swelling after the surgery, which is normal.

Dr. Ingram and his team will ensure you are given a detailed list of do’s and don’ts during your recovery period to aid you in the process.
