Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a technique used in cosmetic surgery to remove fat from a targeted part of your body. You can get it on its own or as part of another cosmetic surgery, like a Brazilian butt lift (BBL), which transfers the fat elsewhere. Liposuction is also a common strategy for abdominoplasty to remove abdominal fat and for gynecomastia surgery to remove extra fat from male breasts.

Before you get liposuction, Dr. Ingram discusses your options for anesthesia and tells you which technique he’ll use. Tumescent liposuction, a common technique, involves a sterile injection of saline into the treatment area before Dr. Ingram suctions fat and fluid from your body using a tube called a cannula.

Other forms of liposuction use ultrasound, lasers, or other forms of energy to loosen the fat cells before the suction begins.

Which parts of my body can liposuction treat?

Ingram Cosmetic Surgery utilizes liposuction for targeted fat removal in the areas you specify. Your fat distribution is unique to you, and it’s up to you to discuss your expectations with Dr. Ingram so he can plan your surgery accordingly. Liposuction can minimize fat on your:

  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Chin and neck
  • Knees
  • Arms

While the surgery can remove a significant amount of fat from areas like these, it isn’t a weight-loss treatment. You should approach your weight-loss goals with healthy lifestyle changes before you consider liposuction as a quick fix.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction is very popular and many people are interested in using it to target stubborn, exercise-resistant fat. However, it’s not an ideal treatment for everyone. Dr. Ingram examines you during an initial consultation and reviews your medical history to determine if you can safely undergo the surgery.

You may be a candidate for liposuction if you’re committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, are in relatively good health, and have realistic expectations for your results. If you’re not a candidate for surgery, Dr. Ingram may recommend noninvasive BodyTite® body contouring treatments as an alternative to target excess fat.

If you’re interested in liposuction but need more information on the surgery, call Ingram Cosmetic Surgery or schedule a one-on-one treatment consultation online today.
