What is Breast Augmentation?

As a commonly performed procedure, Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves inserting saline implants, silicone implants, or a fat transfer (also called fat grafting) into the chest to enhance breast size and aesthetics. During this elective surgery, the breast tissue is lifted which will create an opening space for the implant. This will be done under the nipple. This procedure not only addresses volume loss post-weight reduction or pregnancy but also aims to achieve a more rounded breast shape and correct natural breast size differences. Scarring from a Breast augmentation may be permanent, although Dr. Ingram strives to minimize their visibility. The total time for surgery is typically 3 hours.

Breast implants are frequently combined with Breast Lifts to improve the overall appearance of a woman’s body.

Types of Implants

Choosing the right implant is crucial for your satisfaction post-procedure. Dr. Ingram offers various types of breast implants and will assist you in considering your options during your consultation.

Saline breast implants, a popular choice, are filled with liquid saline. These implants are generally recommended for younger patients without excess skin. On the other hand, silicone breast implants present another option. These implants are softer than saline implants and are believed by some to have a more natural texture. Silicone implants may be an ideal choice if you already have naturally large breasts or have loose skin around your breasts to accommodate the implants. There is a very popular silicone implant option called gummy bear breast implants that maintain their shape, even if a rupture occurs. Fat grafting is another popular option that takes purified fat removed from another location on your body that is added to your natural breast tissue.

In addition to the material, you can also choose the shape of your implants. Both saline and silicone implants come in round and teardrop shapes, allowing you to select the form that best complements your body structure.

Implant Positioning

Breast Implants can be placed above or below the pectoral muscle, with some being placed partly above chest muscles AND partly below. Every patient will have different requirements, but having the implants below the chest muscle helps the silicone gel breast implants to stay softer and produce better mammogram results.

Positioning will also affect the profile of your breasts. The profile refers to the distance that the implant projects from the chest wall, which affects the aesthetic results of the procedure. Depending on your body type, Dr. Ingram will work with you to decide whether a low, moderate, or high profile is best for you.

Who are the Best Candidates for Breast Augmentation?

The best candidates for a Nashville Breast Augmentation surgery are women with the following characteristics:

  • Bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small
  • Breasts are asymmetrical
  • Dissatisfied with your breasts losing shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss, or with aging
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • One or both breasts failed to develop normally or have an elongated shape
  • Physically healthy
  • Unhappy with the upper part of your breast appearing “empty”
  • Your breasts are fully developed

Breast augmentation should only be considered after one’s breasts have been fully developed, but there is no age limitation for breast surgery later in life, as long as the patient’s health allows it.

Once Dr. Ingram determines you are a good candidate, the next step in the process is confirming the breast implant size and type that aligns with your preferences. If you have photos, these can help Dr. Ingram understand what you are looking for, so he can formulate a surgical treatment plan tailored to effectively meet your objectives.

First Steps

What’s The First Step?

The first step in getting breast enlargement in Nashville, TN is to schedule your Breast Augmentation consultation with Dr. Ingram. When you come into Ingram Cosmetic Surgery, you will be able to express your expectations for the procedure and have your body and breasts examined by Dr. Ingram. While performing his evaluation, he will take everything into account, including your body type and desired aesthetic. You will also be asked questions about your medical history and lifestyle, which not only provides more insight into your life but also helps avoid any unnecessary risks.

The next part is what most of our patients find to be the most fun, which is getting to choose the size and shape of their breast implant surgery themselves. You can see some before and after photos, see mold examples, and listen to the pros and cons of each option. Once you and Dr. Ingram have agreed on the techniques, types of breast implants, and a few additional details, he will create your personalized surgical plan.

Once this plan is made and the two of you agree to it, our Patient Coordinator will be able to help you pick your surgery date and provide you with some important instructions to follow pre-surgery.

Prior to your surgery, you will be given some guidelines to help prepare your body for the procedure, including but not limited to fasting, and avoiding blood thinners and alcohol.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Augmentation Surgery

When you arrive at our clinic, our staff as well as Dr. Ingram will first ensure you are comfortable in our inviting atmosphere designed to help our patients feel safe and relaxed. As you are being prepped for surgery, Dr. Ingram will review your breast augmentation procedure details.

First, a type of anesthesia will be given, so you do not feel any pain throughout the surgery.

Beginning the surgical component, Dr. Ingram will make the incisions on the breast. The type of incisions he uses will be determined by the type of implant, the shape of your breasts, and the specifics of your augmentation.

From there, the incision opening allows Dr. Ingram to place the new implant into a pocket of space either under the pectoral muscle (a submuscular placement) or directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle (a submammary/ subglandular placement).

Once the implant has been inserted and Dr. Ingram is satisfied with its placement, he will close the incisions. You may be fitted with a tube to drain any excess fluid over the next few days.

After completing the surgical component, you will be given adequate time to recover before returning home the same day. Our care team will give you information about what to expect and how to prepare for your at-home recovery period. You will likely need to arrange transportation to and from our clinic as breast augmentation is a major surgery, and your body will need time to rest.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Since this is an outpatient procedure, you will be able to return home the same day, but you will need to have a family member or friend drive you from the surgery center, and potentially spend the next day or two with you. It is very important that you take adequate time to rest and recover, so avoid any kind of strenuous activities. A support bra and surgical dressings will be provided, which can help keep the breasts in place, limit the impact of movement, and minimize swelling. Bruising and swelling are common after a breast augmentation, but Dr. Ingram will provide you with some prescription pain medications to keep you comfortable during your initial recovery.

For the first two weeks following your surgery, you will be advised to avoid strenuous or high-impact activity. Taking time off work is also advisable, so you can give yourself the best chance to recover. After about six weeks, you should be able to return to your normal workout schedule and can speak with Dr. Ingram about possible scar therapy treatments.
